Ljig is a relatively new settlement which
originated at the beginning of the 20th century. 1911 was
the first time Ljig was mentioned in history books when the
construction of the railway Lajkovac – Gornji Milanovac began.
In 1917 a beautiful railway station Babajic – Ljig was constructed
in the heart of today’s Ljig. A primary school was built in
1907. The remains of the “Vavedenje” monastery in Slavkovica
tell the story of a turbulent past and impressive life in
the 11th century. It is assumed that Despot Djurdje and Stefan
Brankovic, two Serbian rulers from that period, were sarcophaguses.
According to a legend it is where Jerina, the despot’s wife,
is buried.
In 1917 on the territory of today’s Municipality of Ljig a
well known battle occurred, the Battle of Kolubara. This battle
is documented in Serbian history books and books of all significant
military academies in the world. The monument known as “1
300 Corporals” on Mount Rajac and others serve as a reminder
of this.
Between the two world wars Ljig together with Lipovica, Boblija,
Petakovac and Vrgnjic made up the Municipality of Gukos. In
1922 Ljig separated and became a town in its own right. Not
long after that Ljig became entitled to organizing markets
and public entertainment. In 1928 a Worker’s School was owned,
while in 1930 a Health Union was formed as well as a church.
Prior to this residents had to go to the Moravci church which
was built on the foundations of the homes of Hadzi Ruvim and
Hadzi Djera. |
